A Side of Freedom Fries

Happy Independence Day. Can’t really complain about breaking up the work-week with a little bit of National Holiday BBQ action with friends.

Quick rundown of things that have transpired since I last spewed into the blogosphere.

I found a suit that I actually seem to like. Wasn’t sure that was going to happen. Guess I don’t have to wear that tuxedo t-shirt to the wedding after all.

We met with the wedding coordinator at Scotts Pastry Shoppe about sweets for the reception. They are going out of their way to experiment on some things for us and had some great suggestions. Recommended.

We briefly flirted with buying a lot on the west-side of Madison. After a few visits to the site, some talk with an agent, and some running of the numbers, I think we have determined that building the kind of house we had in mind in Madison is probably not the best idea. If anyone in the Madison area is looking for a great agent/realtor they should give a shout to Kelly Maly, who was recommended to us by multiple friends who used her on their adventures with home-ownership. Super-knowledgeable to a couple of newbies like us and AIM-Friendly to boot. Will be working with her in the future.

I acquired an iPhone at The Apple Store in Milwaukee on Sunday after missing out on the local line-waiting geekfest on Friday. Feels like I have been waiting 5 years for this gem to finally get to market and (minus the fact that mine has a dead pixel issue and will be swapped out) it was totally worth the wait and the pricetag. The biggest plus so far is how easy it has been incorporating it into my daily workflow and organization system. It’s not hyped as a PDA but it performs. Also having a good time exploring the possibilities of web-based stuff optimized specifically for the device. So much fun.

After going through a few days of possible house-building in Madison I think we started to realize just how much we love this place and how hard it would be to leave. On that note I would like to sign off with this (PG-13?) snippet from this weeks Onion about Patton Owalt‘s new album Werewolves and Lollipops. (Patton is a favorite of Danna, myself, and countless others who while coming of age read too many comic books or were the targets of affection of said comic bookers.)

On one track, the comedian names Madison (alongside Austin, where he recorded the album) among American cities that are a “weird, magical fairy bubbble of sanity in the middle of just fucking shit.” But, he continues, there’s a catch for those who grow up in such towns: “You can’t stay there ’til you’re 38 and then go ‘I’m gonna go out in the real world.’ No, you’re not. Your don’t know how it works anymore. ‘You mean I can’t pay for sandwiches with a song?’ No, you can’t. ‘You mean the streets aren’t made of marijuana?’ No they’re not. Not at all. ‘You mean you can’t elect a hacky-sack mayor?’ No, you can’t elect a hacky-sack mayor.”

Hey — I caught your blog through Kate and Ed’s. Thanks for the picture of Calvin, he did enjoy eating anything you put in his hands — including your rocket-ship-air-puffer.!
