Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest 2007 Results
The goal of the contest is childishly simple: entrants are challenged to submit bad opening sentences to imaginary novels.
Always a favorite of mine.
Looks like a Madisonian stepped up and won this year…

Wow. We’ve had an intensely exciting and suspenseful week here at TH corporate headquarters.
Our house hunt went from cautionary to aggressively hopeful. Last Friday we viewed a couple houses for sale one neighborhood over from our apartment, an area we really love but never thought we’d be able to afford. One of those really felt like a good home for us on the inside, and it was on our mind all weekend during the Bottomley Picnic and Moyle Mingle camping gathering. We took a second look on Wednesday and decided to make an offer. (more…)
I discovered tonite (via the always informative and frequently geeky SVN) that the UW-Milwaukee has an entire site devoted to differences in dialect of common phrases and labels between regions of the United States.
Very entertaining.
We took a breather from all of the planning and spent a few short days in Iowa over the weekend watching some swimming lessons, BBQing, playing some Wii, and celebrating with The Freshly-Turned-Eight-Year-Old Monster and other family and friends.
Happy Birthday Keegs.
Friday marked the three month countdown to the wedding. With the cake arrangements just about crossed off the list, it feels like we are making progress in the preparations, but I feel like there must be a lot of little things we are overlooking that are about to sneak up and overwhelm us.
First things first, I turned 26! Yeah, it was two weekends ago, so I’m a little behind. We (meaning teams Hamlett and Oliver) celebrated by riding some roller coasters and waterslides at Mt. Olympus in Wisconsin Dells. Aside from the lines being too long and the water being too cold, we had a pretty good time. We completed the trip by stopping at the outlet mall and then had a delicious dinner at Macaroni Grill (where we were also joined by Sundlings).
The current “free” download of This American Life, a rerun from July of 1997, is entitled “Dreamhouse” and is a new favorite of mine. Two stories of families who packed up and moved to a new place, to start new lives in new homes. Told by the (now adult) children of the familes, who at the time of the moves were just old enough to record their memories.
Driving home from lunch today the sun caught my hair in the rear-view mirror just right and I realized I am probably pushing multiple percentage points on the grey follicles now.
Happy Independence Day. Can’t really complain about breaking up the work-week with a little bit of National Holiday BBQ action with friends.
Quick rundown of things that have transpired since I last spewed into the blogosphere.
