Recent Bests

A rundown of things I have been enjoying the first few weeks of June.

John From Cincinnati

“Surf Noir” on (It’s Not TV It’s) HBO.

Twin Peaks-esque WTF plotline revolving around a disfunctional surfing family. Solid cast and soundtrack so far.

It’s getting mediocre ratings but I am loving it.

Kool DJ Herc and Clyde Stubblefield at Memorial Union Terrace – June 22

The originator of the most sampled breakbeat of all time and the man who invented extending a breakbeat via turntable doubles, sharing a stage for the first time on a rare sweater-weather June Friday night at The Union.

Two turntables and a drumkit collaborating on live breakdowns of “Ain’t It Funky” and “Funky Drummer”

Magical night by The Lake.

Wilco – Sky Blue Sky

The internets are calling it equal parts Lennon, Steely Dan, and Greatful Dead.

It’s definitely not YHF or AGIB but its still Tweedy fronting Wilco. And I still love the way they sound.

Good Magazine

The cover of this magazine was catching my eye for awhile now at the local BN before I decided to check out their website to see if it would be worth picking up. Since then, I quickly devoured the past two issues and am looking forward to subscribing for the next year.

Quick, easily digestible articles that in a nutshell focus on making the reader a more informed, more focused, and in general Good citizen of the world.

Super Paper Mario on the Wii

I haven’t had much time for video games lately what with work and all of the wedding planning that has been going on, (Yeah, I know life is so hard…it’s not like I’m writing this late on on Sunday night watching Mean Streets on Cinemax with a glass of Pinot Grigio after spending all day getting sunburned while riding waterslides and rollercoasters with Danna and the Olivers.) but when I get a chance it has been SPM that has been the goto.

Classic 2D Mario combined with modern Mario 3D and a hipper (kitschier?) than expected storyline and fantastic level design. Chapter 3 may aesthetically be my favorite Mario level ever.
